Gray Oak Power Featured in Fierce Network: The Rise of Behind-the-Meter Power for Data Centers

Gray Oak Power CEO Emilio Vicens recently shared his thoughts at a keynote panel discussion at Datacloud USA in Austin, Texas. The discussion focused on how behind-the-meter solutions are helping data center developers overcome mounting grid interconnection delays. Below is an excerpt and summary from the article.

The Behind-the-Meter Shift for U.S. Data Centers

Data center developers across the country are facing multi-year waits to connect to the traditional electric grid. As power demand surges to record levels, hyperscalers and developers are increasingly deploying purpose-built, behind-the-meter power solutions — including natural gas turbines, reciprocating engines, solar, and battery storage — to bypass grid bottlenecks and bring capacity online faster.

Providing Long-Term Value to Data Centers and the Grid

Industry leaders emphasized that onsite power generation is far more than just a temporary stopgap while waiting in interconnection queues.

“I think these assets provide value, for the mid-to-long term, for more than the data center,” Vicens said. “I’m a big believer that many of these assets could provide value to the grid and vice versa.”

Rather than straining local utilities, behind-the-meter power plants can relieve pressure on public infrastructure and even deliver power back to the grid when regional demand peaks.

Donating Power and Strengthening Grid Resilience

Vicens highlighted that behind-the-meter installations should actively strive to donate power back to the grid whenever local capacity is constrained. By deploying a balanced, flexible solution portfolio, developers can maintain complete operational control while serving as a responsive grid asset. This approach bridges the near-term capacity gap for hyperscalers without burdening ratepayers, creating a bi-directional power ecosystem that benefits both data centers and the broader community for decades to come.
